Josè António Belo

Professor and Chair of Molecular and Cellular Biology of NOVA Medical School, Universida de NOVA Lisboa

Professor José Belo provides advanced expertise in cardiovascular translational research. His team has been involved in the generation and study of animal and cellular models of disease, namely the generation and utilization in vitro of hiPSC-derived 3D cardiac organoid models to gain insights into disease pathogenesis. Integrating preclinical disease models, patient-derived data, and advanced molecular and imaging tools, he focuses on developing and validating biomechanism-based therapeutic and diagnostic interventions for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). By investigating cell-cell signalling pathways, molecular regulators of cardiomyocyte differentiation and proliferation, cardiac remodelling, and endothelial dysfunction, the group studies new targets for precision prevention and treatment.

Role in the consortium: participation in the assessment of the safety/toxicity of NPs using in vitro assays. Different NPs will be tested to evaluate their internalization and the impact on iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CM) and cardiac organoids.
